Dell Adamo Unveiled and Hands-On, Just $1999 for the Stylish Thin Wonder

Dell teased us with a brief showing of their new Adamo laptop line at this year's CES, but after that first peek, we were all left hanging with only a mysterious website to satiate our curiosity. Today, Dell has finally officially announced the Adamo notebook line, which they call a "luxury brand notebook designed for the luxury conscious consumer." We got to play with the Adamo at a recent press preview meeting, and can confirm that this beauty is indeed luxurious -- easily worthy of envy. We have a ton of Adamo unboxing and close-up photos after the jump, but here are the technical details that you care about:

  • Adamo's launch models are 13.4" inches (screen resolution is 1366x768) , priced at $1999 for a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U9300 with integrated Intel X4500 video, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, and 128GB SSD running a custom skinned Vista 64-bit. Dell has also custom skinned the Bios to match the Adamo aesthetic.
  • External hard drives (up to 500GB) and Blu-Ray drives are also available, both of which match Adamo's styling.
  • Dell told us that Battery life rated at 4 hours, even though the press release states 5+.
  • Physically, the Adamo measures only .65" thick (thinner than the Voodoo Envy), and weighs in at 4 pounds. Aside from the Dell and Adamo logos, the notebook's rigid surface --made from aircraft grade aluminum -- bears no other unsightly marks or stickers. Even the Windows authenticity sticker is hidden in a magnetic cover in the back.
  • Built-in ports include 2 USB (with power share, so you can charge devices even when Adamo is off), one eSATA/USB combo port, Display Port, RJ-45 (Wireless N is included), and a SIM card slot for mobile broadband. The Adamo has no Express Card slot nor microphone jack, though a tiny mic is embedded to the left of the keyboard.
  • The Adamo is now available for preorder, shipping March 24th in Pearl and Onyx colors. A $2700 model is also available in foreign countries, and sports a 1.4GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a built-in 3G wireless card.

Intel to refresh laptop chips Monday

ntel will refresh its lineup of chips for ultraportable LAPTOP on Monday.

The new dual-core processors--targeted at Apple MacBook Air-class laptops--include the 2.53GHz SP9600 priced at $316 with 6MB of cache memory and a thermal envelope rating of 25 watts. Slotted below this chip is the 1.6GHz SU9600 (3MB cache) priced at $289 with a thermal envelope rating of 10 watts.

The lineup also includes a single-core 1.4GHz SU3500 with a thermal envelope of only 5.5 watts. This is priced at $262.

Intel ULV and LV chips due on March 30, 2009:

  • SP9600 / 2.53GHz / 6MB cache / 1066MHz FSB / 2 cores / 25W / $316
  • SL9600 / 2.13GHz / 6MB cache / 1066MHz FSB / 2 cores / 17W / $316
  • SU9600 / 1.60GHz / 3MB cache / 800MHz FSB / 2 cores / 10W / $289
  • SU3500 / 1.4GHz / 3MB cache / 800MHz FSB / 1 core / 5.5W / $262
  • ICP900 / 2.2GHz / 1MB cache / 800MHz FSB / 1 core / 35W / $70
Note: ICP900 is a "Celeron" branded chip.

These new chip models being launched Monday are not the rumored "CULV" (consumer ultra low voltage) processors targeted at inexpensive ultra-thin laptops, according to sources close to Intel. Those future chips--which Intel will not necessarily label CULV--are not due to summer, the sources said.

The future ULV processors for inexpensive ultra-thin laptops--similar to the.expected to hit the streets next month--will be priced to allow PC makers to roll out attractive, sleek laptops that are not priced in the stratosphere, like the $1,999 DELL Adamo or $1,799 MacBook Air.

Let's step back for a minute and examine Intel's ULV lineup. Intel low-power mobile processors have been around for a long time but gained prominence with the introduction of ultra-thin luxury laptops such as the MacBook Air and the ThinkPad X300. The newest ULV chips, for instance, power Dell's LAPTOP and the update to the ThinkPad X300, the X301. (The Adamo uses Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 and SU9400 processors.)

So, what is the new line of ULV chips due this summer for inexpensive ultraportables? These processors will be a departure from Intel's strategy to date of putting ULV chips into sleek luxury laptops only. The new chips will target the price segment well below the $1,800-and-up luxury laptop market. Prices for these ultra-thin laptops would range between $600 and $1,300, according to Intel.

The processors--at least according to Intel's theoretical game plan--will not compete with the Atom processor that powers Netbooks, which fall below the $500 price point.

But this will be tricky and potentially not clear to customers. For instance, is a $700 Atom-powered Hewlett-Packard Mini 1000 Netbook with built-in broadband Verizon wireless and an 80GB hard disk drive better or worse than a not-so-full featured Pavilion dv2? We'll have to wait and see how this shakes out.

MSI Wind Gets Final Specs, Packs an Atom

We've gotten the final specs on the Eee PC competitor from MSI called. The big news is that the sub-$500 Wind will be the first 10" laptop to pack Intel's new Atom processor, beating Asus to the punch by a couple of months. Maybe Intel's latest and greatest little chip will help the Wind reach its promised 2.5-hour battery life with a 3-cell battery (since the HP .both fall short in the department). We're looking forward to finding out. Here are the full specs:

Post No 2: The First Intel Yonah Laptop

NEC has announced its plans to launch the first laptop based on the new Intel Yonah dual core mobile processor. The new LaVie RX LR900 was announced at the same time with the 2006 NEC product line. The company offered all the technical specifications for LaVie RX LR900 but for the processor and chipset, which are noted just like Yonah and Mobile Intel 945 Express family.

Yonah is the code name for the dual core version of the Intel Pentium M processors, developed for laptops and small sized desktops. The new chip is scheduled for launch at the beginning of 2006, stated as one of Intels top products in the next year. Together with the Napa platform, Intel promises to support a 667MHz front side bus, a better battery management and also the arrival of the DDr2 67 MHz memories on the Centrino platform.

Post No 3: Cheap Intel Classmates Laptop Coming Soon

The Intel Classmate, the sub-$300 laptop soon to be available in the U.S. and Europe markets. This new laptop reportedly will run on Windows and believed to push down computer prices stronger than before.

Post No 4: Intel and Embraco

Intel and Embraco showed just such a system at the San Francisco IDF back in September. However, this time round, Eden also showed a version of the technology designed to be built into a notebook's casing.

He also discussed an air-permeable material Intel is developing that could be placed under a laptop's keyboard, allowing much more air to be drawn into the machine - a process that's becoming more difficult as laptops get thinner - but at the same time is impervious to liquids spilled on the keyboard.

The laptop stand may go on sale before the end of the year, but the built-in refrigeration system and the spill-proof material aren't likely to appear in notebooks until late 2008.

Post No 5: Intel demos notebook chiller

Intel has revealed details of technologies it’s developing to help reduce notebooks’ internal temperatures and make them resistant to accidental spillages.

Intel Mobility Group VP Mooly Eden demo'd the new techniques at Intel Developer Forum in Taipei today. He showed off a notebook stand-cum-docking station co-developed with micro-compressor maker Embraco - the unit contains three cylindrical compressors, each 2cm in diameter and 10cm long, to drive the coolant around the unit, pulling heat away from the laptop.

The system works much the same way a domestic fridge does. The result: the ability to reduce the laptop's temperature by 10°C.

Pros
Great feature set for the money; highly configurable; good overall performance; LED-backlit display
Cons
Lacks Centrino 2 technology; out-of-date case design; wimpy gameplay
Editors' Take
Designed to carve out a sweet spot between budget-minded Inspirons and higher-end XPS notebooks, Dell's new Studio line delivers a healthy mix of features and options at a great price. Dell still can't get its aesthetics right, but otherwise, the Studio 15 laptop is a winner.

Roll out first Mac with an Intel processor, first of a new generation of Macs.
iMac…no major clapping…disappointed crowd that would have preferered laptops. Same features and same prices and PowerPC version, but Intel processor—the Intel Core Duo– is two to three times faster than the iMac G5 chip. All the applications (iLife) and OS are running natively on Core Duo. “Everything we are doing are universal—run on both PowerPC and Intel,” Jobs said. Entire demo was done on new iMac Duo Core system. Pro applications will be available in March—upgrade $49.

Introduces the MacBook Pro with the Core Duo—one-inch thin, 5.6 pounds. The numbers tell us four to five times faster than the PowerBook G4, Jobs says. “It’s the faster notebook Mac ever..obviously…and the thinnest.” It has a 15.4-inch widescreen display as bright as cinema display, with iSight camera built in.

Jobs demos the MacBook Pro. Video conferences with Apple marketing head Phil Shiller, who is sitting in the audience. Not much of a demo. MacBook Pro has the Frontrow remote control and MagSafe (patent pending)—if the power cord gets yanked, it pull right off, so the notebook doesn’t fly off the table.

Two models that will ship in February…taking orders today. The 1.67GHz model will sell for $1,999, including 512MB of memory, an 80GB hard drive and X1600 ATI graphics card, as well as a SuperDrive. The $2,499 model includes more memory and a faster Duo processor.

15 Post No:Jobs delivers the Intel goods--perfect timing

Steve Jobs walked on the sparse Macworld Expo stage just after 9:00 AM PST and started with the financial results for the quarter, a record $5.7 billion, including 14 million iPods and about 3 million songs per day sold. As usual, he saved the best for last, introducing Intel Core Duo Macs, an iMac and a new higher-end notebook, the MacBook Pro. While Apple is late to the Intel family (Jobs says Apple is freeing Intel processors so they can live in the Mac), the timing is perfect. Apple is among the first to ship Intel Duo Core systems, which are four to five times faster than previous generation of IBM PowerPC-based Macs. Jobs said the entire product line would be Duo Intel’d by the end of the year.

Jobs also demoed updates to iLife, including a new application iWeb, which allows users to build Web sites, including blogs, that live on .Mac, which has one million subscribers. No new iPods, rocks stars or musicians–a solo performance by Jobs. While the crowd clapped at the appropriate times, the Intel iMac didn’t draw much more than polite applause. It wasn’t until the Intel laptop the Mac crowd reach a crescendo.

    16 Post No:Systemax Pursuit 4025 Intel Celeron 15-inch Notebook

This laptop will satisfy the most basic needs of the laptop user. It’s specifications allow it to only just manage the most simple of tasks. However, with the range of extras available, and the ability to customize, you will certainly be able to make it fit your needs without ever having to upgrade.

The barebones model of this computer, without any of the optional extras looks like this…

    • Celeron M 1.4GHz processor
    • 256MB of memory (DDR 333MHz)
    • 40GB, 4200RPM hard disk drive
    • CDRW/DVD combo drive
    • 1280×768 capable XGA screen
    • Full size keyboard

This is certainly one of the most basic laptop computers I have seen for a while. Without the extras it has the minimum that is actually possible with a computer nowadays.

The Celron processor can handle basic tasks, but will not give a provide a pleasant working environment for those who use the computer for many tasks.

The hard drive will certainly be fine for this computing level. Even the best hard disk drives only really provide advantages to very heavy use computers, like servers.

256MB or RAM is my biggest concern. This is hardly enough to feed Windows, let alone operate a whole lot of other things too. There is a 60 dollar upgrade which I would recommend. The 1GB seems a little much, especially seeing as the aim is a budget laptop.

Combination CDROM/DVD drives are well entrentched in the budge market, simply because of the very little extra that it costs to have a CD burner as opposed to a normal CDROM. A DVD burner might be a great upgrade to this machine, especially with the way in which it will ease the backing up and storage of extra data.

It is a full sized laptop and at 6.6lbs will give you a bit of a workout on the stairs. Actually the weight is not bad, it is heavy for a laptop, but not for this range. The full size makes it a good alternative to a desktop at home, but gives the ability to move it around.

Many other options are available, but you can check those out for yourself. They include batteries, floppy disk drives, mice and bigger hard drives.

It’s hard to come to a conclusion with a computer with so many options. But what is great is that whatever you want you will be able to find it here. It really is a full package.

    17 Post No:Intel laptop

Found this product on Business Week. This Intel laptop is simply beautiful. I use Mac mostly and I rarely see PCs that I think has an appealing design. But this model is damn nice. Apparently Intel only had a few instructions for the designers. “The machine has to be fashionable, able to connect to all manner of wireless networks, and full of the latest, fastest computing capabilities. Oh yes, and make it as thin as Motorola’s Razr.”

The model is the world thinnest laptop. It’s 0.7 inches thick and weights 2.25 pounds. Should be pretty impressive for most consumers. If I wasn’t such a Mac freek I probably would have been drooling over this model.

Wow. That’s a really thin and cool laptop. Designed by ZIBA with Intel’s engineers, it is what most people would ask for in their dream laptops. Name it: 0.7 inches thick, 1kg weight, Flash drive (no more scary spinning hard disk - they’re much more stable), 14 hours battery life (Flash drive requires much less power than hard disks), and a folder for the laptop that is also its charger.

For now it’s still a prototype, but let’s hope it’d come true. Quickly. And cheaply.

That is a pretty good docking station if you want your laps to feel cooler when working with your laptop for long durations. I am still thinking how would this docking station work without causing issues related to condensation in a humid city like Chennai, Mumbai etc. I guess they would have definitely thought about this even prepared a work around probably this too early to find about that.
